What Do UROP Projects Offer?
- A paying job
- Approved UROP projects are awarded a stipend of up to $1400 and up to $300 for supplies. The exact amount of the stipend depends upon your estimate of the time needed to complete your project. Stipends are paid at an hourly rate through a Student Employment position (Undergraduate Research Assistant). As you work on your project, you will keep track of hours and turn in biweekly time cards to the office of your faculty sponsor. The payment may not exceed the UROP stipend unless your faculty sponsor has a separate budget to fund additional work.
- Invaluable work experience in your field
- If you have ever tried to get a job, you know that nearly every employer is seeking someone who has experience. If you have no experience, it is very hard to get experience. UROP allows you to choose the area in which you would like to work. You design your own research project or participate in the on-going research of your faculty sponsor, and therefore are able to get experience doing what you really would like to do.
- Opportunity to get to know faculty
- Many times students need to get faculty recommendations for graduate school or employment applications. This can be very difficult if your only interaction with professors has come through class. UROP allows you to work closely with professors and truly get to know them, and they will get to know you as well. It can also be an excellent source of mentoring for students.
