The effects of oxidation on the aging of skeletal muscle

Major

Biochemistry

Mentor

David Thomas

Brief Bio

I like to spend as much time outside as possible especially going backpacking and hiking in the warmer seasons and snowboarding in the winter. I seldom turn down an opportunity to explore new places, meet new people, and expand my range of experiences.

Future Plans

I am involved in research because I believe it complements the study and practice of medicine. I always understand more when I actually use the techniques that I learn about in lectures.

Why Research?

I did research because I plan to apply to medical school. I think research complimented medicine.

What Did I Get from Research?

I have a better idea of what it is like to be a researcher. I have really grown to appreciate the community of the lab. If you need some help, you have a lot of people around whom you could turn to.

How Did I Start?

The summer before my first year, I contacted David Thomas, and I looked at some of his research and found it interesting. After volunteering in his lab, I applied for the UROP.

My Advice for Another Student:

The hardest part is finding a mentor. It was easy for me to find a good mentor, because I found a medical school professor. The medical school professors really enjoy working with the undergrads.

Research Summary

I am looking at medicine, and the effects of aging caused by oxidation. I look at young muscle and old muscle in rats, and try to find ways of preventing the oxidation within the muscle.
