More About UROP

Dates: All parts of a UROP project must be completed prior to graduation. You may not apply for a project during your last semester at the U (you may work on a project that was previously approved however). Your project start date may not be any earlier than 6 weeks after the UROP deadline.

Pay Scale: Students with approved UROPs are appointed as Undergraduate Research Assistants at a current pay rate of $11.50 per hour. Therefore you must be eligible for Student Employment.

Human Subjects: All research involving human subjects requires Institutional Review Board approval. For most UROP projects, this approval can be expedited, but the appropriate process must still be followed. Information is available at the website
http://www.research.umn.edu/irb/

Research Involving Animals: All research involving animals requires approval by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The website providing information about this approval process is
http://www.research.umn.edu/iacuc/

Recombinant DNA, Artificial Gene Transfer, Infectious Agents and Biologically Derived Toxins: Research using any of these materials or techniques must be approved by the Institutional Biosafety Committee. The website for approval information is
http://www.research.umn.edu/ibc/

Academic Credit: UROP will not pay stipends for work that is simultaneously awarded academic credit. UROP stipends can be used for work that either precedes or follows related work that is awarded academic credit. Students doing work for academic credit may also apply to UROP for research or creative activities expenses, up to a limit of $300.00.

Web Sites: UROP does not fund the creation of web sites, unless the web site is incidental to research or creative activity.
